I'm here to join the wait for layers to grow!![]()
I'm planning on having my friend Roger, King of all Long Hair-Friendly Stylists, cut 4 inches off my length to even out my ends. The damage from when I was hospitalized is growing out nicely and my regrowth is really thick and shiny but my ends are thin and have kind of a scraggly look to them. It also bums me out that my braids are pencil-thin. Plus, I'm having some, ahem, split-end issues. Yes I'll be losing almost a year's growth but I'm not worried about that. Quality before quantity.

SL - APL - Just BSL~ BSL ~ Waist length - Hip length
Currently in the infamous BSL stall
I think when I first posted in this thread, I said that I wanted my top layers at collarbone length. They were getting there, but it started to look rather unflattering for my face shape. Due to my hair texture, it tends to be kind of fluffy and flares out a bit towards the ends, and the shape that it started to create as it got longer really emphasized my slightly squared jaw, and made my face look really wide. So two days ago, when I was trimming, I cut back to chin length, and the layers seem to really help create the illusion of a slimmer face, which I find a lot more flattering.
I'm quite happy with this new discovery, as I now have less layers to grow out, and I found out what really works for my face shape.
The layers that I'm still trying to grow out are at APL now. I'm trying to get them between waist and BSL, so I guess I have to work at it for another year. At least they're no longer at an awkward, I-want-to-flip-out-all-the-time length.
Im hairs still recovering from an emo type style from 2 years ago *sigh* sometime I just think I should get extensions then I'm like NO!! thats cheating haha

It was actually a bad layer cut that brought me to LHC in the first place. I went to a really trendy hair salon last August and asked for "layers", meaning long layers. Sadly, that was not what came out of my mouth, so the hairdresser (who was very sweet) looked really pleased and promised she'd "thin my hair out a lot". At that point I did start to worry - I was thinking "really? Why would I want "thin" hair?" But again, I stupidly didn't say anything and looked up from my magazine half an hour later to find that while a lot of my hair was still almost BSL, I had a really thick layer hanging at about ear length. Given that the whole thing was my fault for not being more specific, I just thanked the hairdresser and went home to my four year old niece shrieking "you don't even look like my auntie any more!". Since then I've managed to grow out the top "hair hat" layer to nearly armpit length but my hair looks quite thin and straggly towards the bottom, which I hate. I just can't bear to cut off the long under-layer because I'll feel like I've lost so much length...so I guess I'm in a bit of a limbo (I haven't been to a hair salon since!)
In fact, the layer cut was precipitated by a hairdresser at the same trendy chain actually laughing at me because my hair was all the same length and bringing his friend over to see it! Although (after some persuasion) he did give me another nice blunt cut, I did start to wonder whether having it all one length looked really bad....
I've tied to grow out my layers for a while and my shortest layer are now till my chin. When I first cut it, the shortest layer where to the top of my ears!! It looked horrible + it was all frizzy because of bleaching.
Never. Again.
Stay strong, grow on!
I had a cut yesterday which took off around 50% of my layers - I'm delighted, my hair looks SO much better, thicker, and healthier - as well as looking like it actually has a style instead of being ugly, thin and straggly. Amazing how much of a difference 3 inches can make! There are still thin layers at the back about 3" up, and 'feathering' for much of the front, the shortest parts about 6" up. But the cut has made so much difference I actually think I can grow it out to waist and maintain for a while, instead of my plan of cutting all my growth of for 9 months.
So yeah, I seriously recommend it, I feel so much better about my hair.
UGH after about 4 years of growing out my layers I've FINALLY gotten rid of them. At least in the main body of my hair. My stylist was blending my bangs into my length for a long time and I finally figured out how to word it properly to ask her to stop about a year and a half ago. They're STILL THERE. Now when I Dutch braid, I get these retarded strands that poke out. It looks terrible. >.<
I feel your pain, all of you, really I do.
I found two things that make me feel better about the layers in the past month:
- my buns look more "modern" when hair sticks out everywhere so I can live with them, sometimes I add a bit of coconut oil on the parts that stick out to make them look like they are out there on purpose and to reduce the appearance of frizz
- spraying plain water on my hair before doing a braid really helps, way less hair sticks out
I'm considering making some type of natural hair spray with boiled lemon or using pure aloe vera gel to keep my braids looking more neat
Layers suck and I can't wait to grow them out already lol. I so regret getting a pixie cut before starting to grow out my hair in stead of just babying it and doing regular trims on my already shoulder length hair. But such is life, you live and learn.![]()
No matter how much you hate your hair someone wishes they could have it!
