I'm not very familiar with the Indian Herbs and Oils. I would like to try ,but after reading the post, it seems overwhelming. Can you recommend a few basic oils for some one just getting started? I use Rosemary on my scalp, and Jojoba on the rest of my hair right now. Thanks.

I'll get started by sharing my first experiences with both this week and then I'll show a comparison picture because the condition of my hair after only 2 days is obviously different...in a good way!

I ordered some whole soapnuts from one company, and various Hesh Indian Herbs and oils from another. The first thing that came in was the soapnuts so they were my first experience. My hair was very soft, smooth, and full of static after using Mellie's foam technique with the soapnuts. It was a good experience, but my technique needed some tweeking.

The next day the other order came in and I immediatly did a heavy oiling with the Vatika Coconut Hair Oil and let it sit overnight in a satin sleep bonnet (cute). The next morning I washed with the soapnut liquid I made the day before, but after it dried there was still too much oil present so I mixed:

    1 tb. Aritha Powder
    1ts. Shikakai Powder
    1ts. Amla Powder
    4 dried Hibiscus Flowers
    1 cup filtered water

simmered on the stove for about 15 minutes, cooled and strained a little. I put about an ounce in a squeeze bottle and shook to get a very nice foam that easily smoothed over my hair. I did this in a bath so I could do a mermaid rinse to get any grit out and it worked great. I let it sit on my head for probably 5-10 minutes. It's strange...while it is on your hair it is funky feeling, but as soon as you start rinsing your hair is so soft and smooth. I did a mermaid rinse and then rinsed again with a shower head just to be sure. Here is a before (about 2 weeks ago after a henna and blow dry), and after (today)...I was so shocked when I saw this picture!

Looks really nice.Did you change the saturation in the photo or was it shot in a different room? The colour of the curtain curtain looks different.I'm just eager to know if the herbal treatment has brought in a color change.

Question Re: Using Indian Herbs and Oils to grow, Grow, GROW!

Ok this morning I mixed up:

    1 qt filtered water
1 tbps heenara hair wash powder (this is mostly for the scent) which is 70% aritha powder plus a ton of other indian herbs
    2 tbs shikakai
    1 tbs amla
    1/2 tbs jaswand powder (hibiscus)
    1/2 tbs methi powder (fenugreek)
    1/2 tbs brahmi powder

Simmering in a pan on the stove on low heat right now. Does this sound like a good mix or should I tweak it? I'm looking more for a conditioning wash "tea" or soak than a mud or gravy. I want to see if it helps my hair grow - now that I've had the baby I'm worried about postpartum hair loss plus my hair has been growing REALLY slow for awhile now - I know alot of these herbs are good for hair loss and growth. Prior to this I had used a 50/50 shikakai/amla rinse, but feel it was a bit drying. Hence the addition of methi and jaswand, and the brahmi for hair loss.

This will make multiple washes for me as my hair is still on the short side, probably once a week or so. I am bottling it up in 8 oz squirty bottles and freezing the ones I won't use today.

Cooking the herbs came as completely new information for me here. I usually just mix them with water and shake the bottle and put it in my hair. So far it works sort of meh.

I haven't used my herbs since then, but I wonder if I am doing something wrong here...

It's a herbal mix that I have, inci:

Shikakai, Amla, Aritha, Sapindus Mukorossi, Terminalia chebula, Terminalia belerica, Emblica officinalis, Phyllanthus urinaria

I also wonder about the amount of water I should mix with them? Is it better to have a liquid, or do you guys find paste to work better? I also wonder how long I should leave it in and if I should put it in dry hair?

Sorry, this was a lot of questions, but I can't seem to find much answers on my own here, this herb washing thing is just so overwhelming.

Lets see how long this little lump can get. Viva la natural!

We used to get bottled dry herbs(mixture of several barks, leaves and flowers)to make hair oil.

I thought maybe there should be a group for those of us who either use herbs in their hair care routine or are interested in the topic So if anyone's interested, here we go .

I really would love to start a hair routine using Indian herbs and oils. I will be reading this whole thread for ideas. Is this kind of routines okay to use on a 4 year old? I also want my little one to have beautiful healthy hair!!

I haven't tried it in the "gravy", but I have tried it as conditioner and it was too much, it made my hair feel greasy and stringy/heavy. I've heard it's good for a before-you-wash treatment.

I've started to get a hang of these herbs of mine, they wash very well. I made a paste of it instead of making a liquid to pour on my hair. The paste felt very shampoo like, and worked great to wash out coconut oil.

I think I will go into herb/oiling routine for a while now, I just ordered some dabur vatika coconut oil
