Method of application details for coconut and argan oils (TAM)

Timing
The method of application post timing of at least an hour, is a general recommendation, based on reports of 10 and 15 minutes, resulting in after pretreatment and conventional hair colouring/lightening dryness. There was still no hair damage reported. Timing can vary with individual choice and what process is being done to the hair. The oil(s) need time to saturate the hair and be absorbed as much as possible. In the research on cells, the cells were preincubated with flavonoids for 24 hours, before being subjected to hydrogen peroxide. I do not think that 24 hours is necessary for the pretreatment but overnight has been reported to be a preferred option. So has less time, as in less than 1 hour. To me, it depends on what process is being used.

Access to the hair
Any coating on the hair can negatively affect conventional hair colour and lightening results and has been reported to do so. The pretreatment oil(s) should help with porosity issues and uneven colouring results and both dye uptake and colour results have been reported to be excellent, when these oils have been used.

Amount of oils used
Initially there were concerns, that a heavy pretreatment oiling, would interfere with conventional hair colouring and lightening results. The opposite has been reported to be the case. More of the oil(s), has been reported to resolve after process dryness issues, and both colour and lightening results have been reported to be excellent, when coconut oil/coconut oil & argan oil have been used.

The method of application post is designed to help the pretreatment yield optimal results, and is based on the reports to date, and research.

I am happy to report that a pre-treatment of argan and coconut oils seems to have prevented damage from conventional hair dye, and actually improved dye uptake.

I've decided to take a break from henna, and opted to use a semi-permanent dye to color the new hair growth, and touch up fading color on the length. After washing with a mild shampoo, I let my hair dry for a bit, then applied the oils from roots to the ends; enough to saturate but not feel greasy. I left this in overnight, and dyed my hair in the morning. I used conditioner to rinse out the dye, which was not quite effective enough to remove all the oil, but my hair felt fine afterward. Normally it would take a few days for my hair to recover from from the dye process, and require lots of pampering. I CO washed again the next day, which removed the remaining oil residue. There was no noticeable dye runoff after this second wash, which has never happened before. Usually my hair would bleed color for several washes.

Thanks so much to ktani for starting this thread, and everyone who posted about their experiences. I'm still leery of using conventional dyes on a regular basis, but it is good to know that I can use them occasionally without the risk of serious damage.

Update on the condition of my hair:

It's been ten days since I colored my hair, and the oil really does seem to have completely protected my hair. I haven't had any dryness or breakage, and my hair is smooth as silk. I'm pretty sure you can mark my case as a success.
