How long is too long hair stick?

I just remembered that I had some old laquered chopsticks that my mom brought over from China before I was born. Smallest measures 9 inches. I can't shorten them do to thickness and age. Not even sure there wood as there high end Chop sticks meant for formal dinners. I have never put my hair up in a bun only ponytails. Would these work do to length and or thinness? My hair is slick and above avg thick but not super thick. Sorry can't post pictures as on my tablet posting.

At 9" I would think you'd get the 'helicopter prop' look

If you had much longer hair, then 7" would be max; 6-6'5' is the usual seen on LHC.

In the self made hairtoys thread others may have ideas for shortening them if you can post a pic.

I mean... they'll probably work. It just might look silly. I prefer my sticks and forks under 6" myself. 7" only looks "right" to me on people with very long (like... knee) and/or very thick hair. Though I might personally err on the shorter side because I like my toys to be nestled cozily into my updo.

I agree, 9 inches is quite a lot. For me, I prefer 5 1/2 to 6 inches maximum, otherwise the ends will stick out too much for my preference. I have paintbrushes of all sizes so I know what is a bit too much for me

You could maybe try using a smooth pen or pencil as a hair stick, just to get a reference point

Agreed, 9” could work, but it’ll probably look oversized. I favor large hairsticks myself (I like to see a little bit of pretty hairtoy sticking out from the bun), but even with that preference I stick to the 6.5-7” range. It’s a nod to both aesthetics and utility. Big hairsticks are more likely to hit backs of chairs, your own neck when you lean back, or look funny from the front.

ETA: I love Glitch’s suggestion, it’s a nice way to determine what your preferred length before you move to the modding process.

At that length they will stick way out your head, and it will be hard not to bump into things - I say it's a safety hazard. I would not wear them. If you can get your hands on kids' size chopsticks, go for it, they are way shorter.

On my head 6" is the absolute max, I have a small head.

Was measuring mine... Lol they are all 9 inch. A bit long yeah. Bought them at the Korean market. I have never tried real deal hair sticks. I think they look too thick so I never gave them a proper try. I should in the future but I like mine. They don't bother me and I like the look of it as they can be seen from the front. And the design on the ends can be seen no matter the hairdo. Try them and if they bother you, Lapushka' s advice is top notch because kids ones are really easy to find too!
