I bleached my hair and then dyed henna over it some time ago... then I didn't like it so I tried covering it with a semi but the semi never covers it well enough. I would really like to try a demi deposit only dye instead. Is that ill advised?

Here is where my hair is now. I just want it to be soft black again and I can't chance indigo.

Sounds like a good idea to me, provided you strand test first to make sure you're getting the result you're after. Demis can fade in interesting ways, so it's worth testing the fade as well as the fresh colour. I'm sure you already know this, but you'll also need to take into account that you'll need to top up the colour regularly. How regularly depends on your hair, the dye, and how often you shampoo. As you don't need to dye your roots, you should have an easier time with the fade.

I just realized I can't chance the damage during the no trim challenge. That gives me 6 months to think it over. Until then I think I'll just have to switch up the semi to a darker shade and hope it makes the line less noticeable. Who knows, maybe by the end of that it will be long enough that the line hides in a bun a bit more.

Within 6 months you should have enough root regrowth to make it super easy to put it up & forget about it.

True and if I'm still obsessed with it then I can still fix it when the six months has passed. Six months will give me plenty of time to think it over.

I love how color changes can enhance the look of braids. Ylva’s gorgeous braid hawk was a great example of it. Maybe you can find some styles to work with your line of demarcation?

I wish. I have layers up to my chin so cool braids end up looking shredded with giant spike sticking out. It sort of sucks.

Is a demi usually safe to do over henna?

Deposit-only dyes are not damaging in my experience.

If you haven't used BAQ (body art quality) henna I would strand test, and be careful.

I just... would grow it out. You have gotten quite far already, it would be a real shame to mess that up, IMO (if you can mess it up). Those roots are precious!
