"Friend" box unchecked?

Sorry to ask another "friend" feature question! On my list of friends, I have a member where the avatar box is checked but the friend box is unchecked. What does that mean? Did I accidentally unfriend them? Or did they unfriend me

It means this is a contact, not a friend. The difference is that this person can read your blog and see your photos, if they're friends and contacts only, but you can't read their friends only blog.

How this have happened, I can't say, both ways you mentioned above are possible.

It means that they are on your "contacts" list. You may or may not be on their "contacts" list. (The "contacts" list is private, the "friends" list is public.)

Since they are on your "contacts" list, they can see your private journal. If you are on their "contacts" list, you can see their private blog. You can tell be whether or not you see their blog, sort of. If you see their blog, either it is public or it is private and you are on their "contacts" list.

The presence on your list, and the unchecked box, tell you nothing about whether or not you are on their "contacts" list and able to see items they make "private."

I had planned on leaving here a while back and in cleaning up, I deleted all of my "friends".

When I changed my mind, I felt too foolish to explain to everyone my reasons, etc. and so I said nothing.
I'm sure some of them thought I did it because I didn't like them.
But that wasn't the case.

Maybe something similar happened in your case.

I "cleaned out" my list back in November. I only kept the people who I talk to or who have blogs that I read. In my case, it was nothing personal and I hope no one is offended. I got tired of it feeling like a popularity contest.

It is possible that someone unclicked you by clicking on your name rather than your avatar (when you are in the window that shows your friends and it is laid out in a 4 columns by however many rows of friends). I know this because I accidentally unfriended someone early on by clicking their name to go to their profile. It didn't work, so I had to click on the avatar. I later figured out they weren't my "friend" and that is the only reason I could figure out.
