Angle them so they're more oriented toward the sides?
I don't usually wear hairsticks, I usually use pins (similar shape to amish pins but from the dollar store lol). Part of the reason is whenever I do use sticks, as I move my head around throughout the day, the bottom end of the sticks get under some of the nape hairs that are heading up towards the bun, where they get caught and pull. I unhook it, but it just keeps happening. It also happens with forks.
Anyone else have this problem? Any solutions?

Battle Wench Arvoreen of the Scything Curls in the Order of the Long Haired Knights
I purposefully weave the tines of my combs and fork through the hair on the other side of my bun to keep it from unraveling and then the tines are unable to pull hair I want left alone.
I don't have that problem but I would also say angle the hairstick or fork or push it farther through. You might have to make the updo higher to do that so it won't stab you in the neck

Same thing happens to me when the stick is vertical. Angled sticks tend not to catch on the baby hairs at my nape.
Oh yeah, I have this too when I can manage a figure 8. It happens when the sticks are almost vertical. Try more of an angle and the problem is gone
I don't have exactly your problem Kyamo, but sometimes the points of my sticks and forks catch on my short nape hairs (which curl and tangle). This happens if my bun twists around because I haven't made it secure enough.
