I get build up from castor oil on my scalp and hair. I can't use it in any products because of it. Granted I have hard water.....that makes a difference.
Yes! I used it for my scalp massages earlier when I had problems with my hairline. It really helped.
Yes, I have used it few years ago. But I was making a mistake - I was using it straight, undiluted. It's so thick and sticky I had to shampoo 2-3 times to get it all out, and still it was leaving me with build-up. But I think it helped in the regrowth.
I reccomend you dilute it with another lighter-weight oil like coconut, sweet almond or sunflower oil.
About the eyelash and eyebrow growth, I'm seeing a greater difference in the thickness. I guess that's because these have a much shorter growth cycle and terminal length than hair on the scalp, so you get more obvious results quickly.
Does it seem like it actually encourages more hair to grow, or is it plumping the existing hairs (which I have heard castor oil does)?
I have used castor oil on my scalp for almost a year (mixed with avocado oil, which is lighter and is also said to encourage growth). My hair grew incredibly well all last year (I went from BSL and am now less than an inch shy of tailbone - all this with regular trims).
I stopped using castor oil over the past two months (due to lack of time) and my hair has grown significantly slower. I know hair tends to grow slower in the winter, but still - I'm thinking there's probably a link. Of course, scalp massages themselves help, too, but I'm pretty certain the castor oil gave my hair growth a boost, too. At least on me ;)
I won't be taking this step out of my routine anymore.
I do have a dry skin (and therefore scalp), and don't have any build-up problem, even though I use a very mild shampoo (no SLS). I might have to apply shampoo twice to make sure I've rinsed it out completely (especially now I live in London and the water is harder), but it's no biggie for me. Be sure to warm up the oil in a bowl over a pan of hot water to make it more fluid. :)
i'm really really interested in your castor/avocado oil mix to add along to my other hair projects and routines.
how did you use it? as a scalp treatment or for your whole length? how much did you use? how often? once you washed it out, did you notice if it left your hair feeling greasy or anything?
did you notice any significant shedding when you stopped?
I use castor for my OCM washes, mixed with other oils. Lately, because my pregnant belly is so huge, I have been mixing castor with wheat germ oil and using it as an all-over oil - OCM, body moisturizing, and a bit on the ends of my hair whenever it gets damp. My hair has been softer and seems to be growing fast, but this is undoubtedly due to hormones!
I have to be really careful with oils as my hair gets greasy very fast, but find that castor-wheat germ is a very forgiving combination. However, I only rarely oil my scalp, and that is only before I am going to go swimming.
Since I really love what this oil mix is doing for my skin, and since I can't be bothered to use separate oils for skin and hair, I will keep using it. However, it is not clear to me that castor is really doing anything for my hair growth...I don't believe there is really anything you can put on your scalp to make your hair grow faster!
Hi Bene, I used this mainly as a scalp treatment - if I have a bit leftover I will "wipe" my hands in my hair, lol :p. While I do the scalp treatment, I usually treat my length and ends with another oil that is better suited for it - camellia, sweet almond or hemp for instance. I leave the whole for at least 30 minutes before shampooing, but if I can, I leave it in longer - sometimes overnight, but most of the time at least an hour.
I wash my hair every 6 to 8 days (the more I wear my hair up, the longer I can stretch the interval between shampoos) and no, my hair does not feel greasy at all after it's been shampooed. I can't stand greasy hair so I would wash it more often if it did feel greasy.
I do have dry hair and scalp to start with, though. This is something to take into account, but I do believe warming the mix carefully and mixing the castor oil with a lighter oil, does help.
I did not notice any more shedding *at all*, no - this does not work like Monistat ;)
I also meant to warn everyone here - castor oil is definitely darkening, so please be aware of this if your hair is light-coloured and you like it this way.
thank you for answering, i am definitely trying this once i get my hands on the ingredients :)
I'm also confused by this. Is it really the fact?? I never noticed any change.
I experienced the darkening myself, actually. Several of my friends have as well. Nothing dramatic, but some (lighter-haired) have been bothered.
Maybe depends on the oil, the hair, and if you're doing other stuff to your hair?
Don't know.. I actually used it straight. Not mixed with other oils.
I used to use castor oil a lot as a scalp treatment when I was still in school and it did help my hair grow faster, as well as contributed greatly to the oerall health of my hair. I was using it to soothe scalp iritations, and it did a great job at that as well.
Lately, I started using it again as my hair became very very dry after all the chemical processing I've put it through...
Now I made a mix of castor oil, EVOO, glycerin, honey and a bit of water in a spritzer bottle and I just spritz it all over my hair and scalp and leave it overnight. This really makes my hair soft and shiny.
I have tried a bunch of different oils and still feels like castor oil is the best for my hair.
Katze: so much the better, then :)
I love, love, love castor oil!!! I've been using it mixed with a little bit of coconut oil after thinning it (castor oil) with some EO.
I have tried it by itelf in the past & it's worked really well, especially in regrowing my hairline.
I would recommend trying it diluted & using a drop of it to massage scalp all over - try for at least a month or 2 to see it it works for you.... (if it's too greasy or sticky then dillute some more or to your liking)
OK, now I'm curious... What ratios are you using of castor oil to other oils? And where are you getting the castor -- is this just the pharmacy stuff that's supposed to have, um, digestive effects, or do you order it online for skin/haircare?
I tend to do 50/50.
I get mine (organic) from a French website, which I'm afraid may not be of much help to you
I have a Hesh castor oil, but rarely use it because it's so thick. I am back to doing OCM on my face, so let's see if it makes my eyelashes grow like weeds. :) lol
I use 4:1, castor to coconut oil (I like my oil mix on the thick side...) with a few drops of EO of choice & I use Home Health's cold pressed castor oil
What exactly is "castor"? Petroleum by product like vaseline or natural occuring?
Castor (castor seeds) is a plant. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castor_bean
Well, I've tried it twice (50:50 mix of pharmacy castor oil and Vatika oil), and I'm shedding more than usual. I think I'll give this a break for a few weeks, and then see if it does it again.
Scalp oiling may be one of those things that I simply can't do. The more stuff I put on my scalp, the more I seem to shed.
Another proof that everyone's scalp is different and responds differently...
For example, now that I introduced castor oil to my routine again (after a couple of months), I find that I shed a lot less during washing and I already have some new growth at my hairline, especially around temples where I had some thining.
I just love castor oil! :cheese: I usually add 2-3 drops of rosemary and chamomile EO to it for every scalp massage.
Also I have no problems what so ever with oiling the scalp and find that a CO removes it easily.
I have been using castor oil mixed in with rosemary and nettle essential oil and i love it. When i use coconut oil i shed a lot but not with castor.
So if someone who to use castor oil for a scalp massage 1. can you massage it in with a brush and 2. should the oils stay on your scalp for a certain amount of time before you wash your hair? i have a partial bottle of castor oil from a pharmacy. Can I mix it with coconut oil so it won't stink? Is it safe to microwave it? Maybe this would help my bare nape hair area.
1) you can massage it in in whichever way you feel is easiest, if that means a brush then go for it as long as the brush isn't damaging or tangling your hair in your judgment.
2) i would say keep them on for at least an hour or two, but IMO overnight is best.
Coconut oil is good one to mix it with if you already know you like it, sesame, sweet almond, avocado, olive, wheatgerm or really any other nourishing oil could be used instead or as part of a blend if you wanted to experiment :)
I would think that it's safe to microwave it, but my personal choice would be to warm it in a bowl of warm-hot water, or on a radiator. Although i've not found that castor oil needs to be warmed, but the coconut oil would be if you wanted to mix it.
I really hope it does help your nape area, i know this has been an upsetting issue for you and i'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you
HTH :flower:
Couldn't have said it better. Ditto to everything you just said!
I'll have to try adding rosemary EO to my mix next time.
1. As ChloeDharma said, any way you like is fine.
2. I like to leave it at least 3/4 of an hour, up to overnight. Most usually I leave it on for 2 hours. I'm not sure leaving it for more than this makes a difference; keeping it on overnight is just more practical sometimes.
3. yes, you can mix it with coconut oil; but I wouldn't microwave it. Your oil might get too hot and lose some of its properties and vitamins. This is why the bain-marie method is better. :)
Please read the following article. I don’t know if it’s a good idea for a pregnant female to use it on their hair.
http://www.cancer.org/docroot/ETO/co...Castor_Oil.asp
Quote:
Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should not use castor oil, nor should people with intestinal blockage, acute inflammatory intestinal disease, appendicitis, or abdominal pain. Medicines that are dissolved in or based on castor oil compounds can cause allergic reactions.
I don't think it so much encourages growth as protects the length of the lashes. After all, most people are putting it on the length, not the root of the lash.
Is castor oil very waxy?
I don't use jojoba oil for this reason.
I've been using it the night before I wash my hair in the morning and just letting it sit overnight. I take one of those bottles from Sally's with the very narrow tip and just drip it onto parts of my scalp. I wash it out in the morning with a SLS free shampoo and haven't noticed any bad buildup. I do scrub pretty good tho with the shampoo, which I think makes a huge difference in the cleanliness of my hair.
So far I think my hair is growing faster. I haven't done any measurements to be sure, but my "short layered ends" aren't giving me as many problems as before in regards to when I pull my hair back. I think it's cause they're finally long enough, which just occurred after using the castor oil.
PBI, I got mine from CVS and yes it is the kind used for digestive purposes. ;)
I am definately a castor oil convert and love love love it!
It has stopped my major sheds in its tracks so now I am addicted to regular castor oil soaks.
I first started using it due to a thread on using it on your lashes. I started putting it on my lashes and was absolutely amazed at how long and thick and dark they got really quickly. So, of course the thought of putting it on my head came next.
I used regular Walmart castor oil. It is thick so I mixed it with some EVOO and later whatever oil I had around to think it just enough to make it easier to apply. I use a Q-tip and part my hair with that and rub it on the parts and then later massage it in. I do it overnight before a wash.
I have had no trouble whatsever getting it out. Right now I am using a dairy whip, AO GPB, baking soda mix to shampoo.
I have very little shed on this routine.
Please share what are the measurements of ingredients that you use in your castor oil mixture. I'm very anxious to try it!! Thanks!!
