Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha/Soapnuts?
I am almost out of my soapwort root now, and although I love it, I am considering using this opportunity to try some other natural shampoos. Of these three: yucca, soapwort, aritha nut; which one is your favorite and why?
Thanks!!

I never tried soapwort or aritha, but I have tried yucca root, 2 different species.
I found that while both did clean my hair, each one left a residue that built up.
It was easily removed by shampoo but I did not care for it.

I saved this post by Shell, on using yucca as a shampoo.
I never followed mine with a vinegar rinse or mixed it with other herbs.

Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
From least to most favorite: yucca -> soapwort -> aritha. Aritha cleans the best, for me. :)

Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
I have the same experience as Flaxen. Of all of the cleansing herbs I've used (soapwort, yucca, shikakai, and aritha) I like aritha the best. It cleans very well with out stripping. Shikakai cleans well, but my hair had dryness issues. Soapwort cleans well, and yucca cleans okay. I found yucca worked best when used together with soapwort. But really my clear favorite is aritha.

Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
I tried shikakai at one time, and found it to be too drying even though I have oily hair. It stripped my hair even more than sl(e)s shampoos did.

Where is your favorite source for aritha?
-
Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
I have had a lot of trouble finding a U.S. distributor for the aritha. I only found this one, does anyone have any experience with them?

I do not have an Indian grocery store nearby, unfortunately...

Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
Mellie are you looking for whole aritha or powdered?
-
Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
I'd prefer whole, if possible.

Here is a Canadian supplier for whole nuts.

How do you use the whole nut ? Do you boil it or make a tea out of it ?

Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
Does aritha darken hair? I'd like to try it, but don't want to change the silver color.
-
Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
I don't think that it darkens. Can anyone answer that? I know that Soapwort doesn't.
It was funny, I was shopping online and comparing prices, and trying to decide which place to order my soapnuts from, and my DH said, "Why don't you look on Amazon? They have everything!" And I said, "Oh, I'm sure they wouldn't have it, it's something you have to get at Indian grocery stores." He said, "Try it!" And you know what, he was right! Amazon.com sells soapnuts!

No it doesn't.

Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
OK, I did my first soapnut shampoo today! My hair looks and feels great! Smells a little funny to me (hard to describe, kind of nut/berry-ish, I guess?) so I added just one drop of Lemon E.O. which was much better to me.
I followed up with a horsetail and nettle rinse. Fabulous!

Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
Oh my goodness I have to try this too!! Have you tried the laundry soap yet? did you look for soap nuts on ebay? I will start looking tomorrow or at my natural food store.
thank you

Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
I bought the soapnuts on Amazon.com. I haven't tried them as a laundry soap yet but I should! :-)
-
Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
I am on amazon and I found them. I don't know which one to try. Who did you go with? How much did you get and should you have bought more /less?
-
Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
I buy my aritha powdered at my local Indian store. My local health food store has aritha laundry soap, but I haven't tried that yet; hmmm maybe I will.
I'm so glad that the aritha wash went well!

Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
shell soapnut is the same as aritha? right?
-
Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
Well day two was not as good, unfortunately. By mid-day my roots were very greasy, so much so that I used some dry shampoo. Maybe I didn't use enough soapnut shampoo? Since it's just a liquid which doesn't lather, it's hard to know how much to use.
Re: which ones I ordered from Amazon; I ordered the 1 Lb. of Lullwater Soap Nuts (shipping was going to be almost $10 no matter what size I got, so I figured I might as well order a lot!) :-)

Yes, they are the same--also Reetha is another name for Aritha.
Mellie, maybe you need to adjust to less cleansing, or maybe it's more cleansing than you usually use. What routine are you switching from?

Previously, I was alternating between soapwort and a commercial non-SLS shampoo. After a few days with soapwort, I would have greasy roots and have to use the regular shampoo.
I didn't use very much of the soapnut liquid. I filled a little pump bottle with it (I'm guessing it's a 4 oz bottle), and I only used less than half of it to wash my shoulder-length, very thick hair. Maybe it just wasn't enough?

Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
Oooh looks like I need to try aritha! I'm currently using soapwort and have some yucca to try. Thanks for this thread!

I might wash twice with the herb mixture, and give up on the SLS shampoo. I suspect that the shampoo is over cleaning, and that the herbs will perform better used on their own. You could try several washes in a row with herbs, increasing frequency at first, to see how it worked. Then once things stabilize, you could stretch out your washes again.
Also, when using herbs, I apply the mixture, let sit for 10 minutes or so (while shaving etc), massage, then rinse. Did you do it this way?

Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
Approx. how many ounces do you use?
I used approx. 1-2 oz., massaged into scalp, let it sit while I scrubbed the rest of my body, then rinsed out well.

Well, I don't do it the same way. I do a tea of soapwort and usually other herbs (horsetail, red clover, marshmallow, are the usual, but I might add other stuff too) of about 3-4 cups. I make sure all of my scalp and hair are completely saturated. Unlike Indian herbs, I don't wet my hair first, but apply to dry hair.
2 oz. of soapwort solution, unless it's very concentrated, doesn't really sound like enough.

Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
OK, maybe I should try using a lot more then, and report back! :-)

I really hope that it works for you! Herbs are so great, but there's definitely a learning curve.
-
Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
Haha, hopefully the learning curve is quick! :-)
I do enjoy using herbs too... I don't like putting unpronounceable chemicals on my body!

Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
shell would you share your recipe? Can I get them from my garden? or grow them if I don't have them now? I have soap-wort this year but now sure how to prepare it.
-
Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
Hmmm, sounds interesting (something new to try once I use up my 101 bottles of shampoo [lol]).
-
Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?
OK, success!! I went up to using a full 4 oz. of soapnut liquid when washing, and after two days now my hair is doing really well. It's not totally squeaky clean like with commercial shampoo, but it's definitely NOT greasy like before! It is very very soft, for one.
It has also done some crazy stuff with the body of my already thick hair, take a look:
Before (using Stonycreek Botanicals shampoo):
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...ictureid=17655
After two days of soapnut washing:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...ictureid=17656
It seems to have a similar effect to soapwort though, in that it pulls out henndigo much faster than my commercial shampoo! I just henndigo'ed last week, and after just a few days with the soapnuts, I already notice my grays being noticeably lighter!

Where do you guys get all this stuff??? I have seen soapnuts around but all the other things sound like I would have to go on a serious nature walk to find them all. Also, how do you make your soapnut tea, thanks!

Re: Yucca Vs. Soapwort Vs. Aritha?

How exactly are you making the liquid?
You bought the nuts whole?
Are you shelling them, then boiling to produce liquid?
Please share your method step by step.
