Default Hi, I'm new here also

    Hi,
My hair is very long..i started growing it out many years ago. I have always had bangs and have done frequent trims. 2 years ago i decided to let my bangs grow out so they are now past my chin.
The back and sides of my hair are getting very "straggly" looking. I haven't had it trimmed in almost a year and i absolutely can NOT trim it myself.
I will hopefully find a hair dresser that will not take a lot off the back although even if i cut a few inches the bottom of that would still be "thin" and see through.
I don't use a blow dryer which honestly sometimes i would like too but my hair ALWAYS gets sucked up in the back of the fan no matter how careful i am.
I also use sulfate free shampoo and conditioner..i never brush, always wide comb and yet even when I got frequent trims my hair always looks so beat up at the bottom few inches.
I'm just not sure what to do with it. I always do wear it in a loose bun so it's not damaged from wearing it down.

Welcome! I also have had thin hair and the ends are straggly... but they work well in a bun.

I wore it in a bun when it wasn't straggly, just a habit and I'm a bit older and so many people have told me at 57 I'm too old for long hair.

I don't think you should put any stock into what length your hair "should" be when you're older.

You are not too old for long hair! I'm 51 and I have long hair, and I'm not chopping it off, and I've lost it to chemo, so I'm never going short ever again! Even my Mom has said that shoulder length is long enough, but I disagreed and told her that I wouldn't go any longer than waist length, since if I'm sitting on it, it's too long (at least for me). With natural curl, the shorter it is, the more it resembles the dreaded "poodle dog" look, which isn't flattering on anyone (except for maybe a poodle dog). Screw the "age appropriate" hairstyles! I have long hair because I prefer it to short hair (which is nothing but a nuisance with the upkeep and I'm very low maintenance, so I don't need the extra work), not because I'm trying to impress anyone else, just myself.

Welcome! May I ask why you're unable to self trim? There are some fantastic guides here and on youtube that can help with that. Additionally, have you heard of the revair? It's a bit pricey, but if a traditional blowdryer is giving you grief, it can be an option.

I think long hair is suitable and appropriate for any age!
