    Default Egg shampoo questions

Hey all. I've been interested in lately in egg shampoo. It seems nice and all-natural, and easier than looking for hard-to-find herbs, like soapwort. I found the recipe in the Western herbs article, and I did a little searching, and I'm a little concerned that the recipe calls for lemon juice. I have very dark hair, and don't want any lightening. Could I use ACV or some other ~pH-2 liquid instead of lemon juice? And does anyone just mix up one egg, without the extra egg yolk? I don't use egg whites for much, so it seems a bit of a waste.

Also, do you follow with a rinse? An acid rinse or an herbal tea? I was thinking some nettle or catnip tea, with a little lavender for scent, would be nice.

    Thanks for your help.

I'd like to know this also.

And to add to the questions, don't you use the egg-whites at all in shampoos?

I'd like to know about the rinses as well.

I've used egg shampoo with lemon and honey without any lightening effects, but I don't know if it'll stay that way if used in the long run.

I'm honestly not sure... I say try it though and find out. I'd really substitute the lemon, though. I used to use egg shampoos a lot, but as I recall I did egg shampoos and then my dads-extra-bottle-of-beer conditioner lol. Both work nice, but I forgot I couldn't rinse with warm water. oi

"Extra bottle of beer?" I'm not sure I understand . If there's a bottle of beer in the house, it gets drunk. Catnip tea is slightly less tempting a hair rinse...

I sometimes use Finoriel's egg shampoo recipe, which is this (taken from her own post about it):

The basic recipe is: 1 whole egg mixed with one teaspoon honey - mix well until the honey is dissolved and then add a squirt lemon juice (or citric acid or ascorbic acid or any other ingredient which is acidic). Mix well again.
Sometimes I add some henna or cassia to make it less runny and some skin-safe EOs if there are scalp imbalances of some sort or just for scent.
I apply it to wet and already rinsed hair under the shower and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, depending on how greasy my hair is. Rinse out with warm water. And following it with an acidic rinse, chamomile tea with a pinch of ascorbic-acid, in my case.

    ***

I also follow it with a mild acidic rinse, using chamomile tea and either lemon juice or citric acid.

ETA: I only use the egg yolk, and 1 egg is more than enough.

Here are a couple of egg washing threads from the archive. My favorite recipe was egg and amla (no aloe).

I use one whole egg, tea spoon of honey and anything acidic I find in the house. Usually citric acid, but last time I didn't have any and I put instant juice (powdered sugar and acid, coloured and flavoured, for people from ex-Yu, you'll know this one: Cedevita ), and it worked just fine.
The acid is what keeps my scalp from producing wax like mad.

As for the rinse, my hair feels better with a rosemary rinse (I am dark haired as well), but I find it is not necessary, and it does tend to build-up, so I use it on and off.

    Good luck experimenting!

Out of curiosity, is the difference between an egg wash and a protein treatment basically the length of time it is left on? I think I am going to try this right now!
