I’m no stranger to blending my own oils, but sometimes when life picks up and carries you away with it, there just isn’t time. I’d walked past this in Target a few times before it finally ended up in my hand. With this in one hand and my phone in the other, I checked out the ingredients, the claims, and the company. The ingredient list surprised me, as I’d expected this “natural” product to be full of fragrance and preservatives hiding as extracts (it happens). Nevermind the silicones that these oil blends typically contain, and usually, when a much coveted oil (such as argan oil) is listed on the front label, it’s never a surprise to find it very low down on the ingredient list (meaning that there is very little of the ingredient in the formula). I was very happy to see that argan oil is the second ingredient listed. There was only one extract in it, hibiscus sabdariffa flower extract, which is a potent anti-oxidant. It helps to heal sun damaged skin and I have no complaints with this particular extract. I noted that the rest of the ingredients shared similar healing qualities and that, in my humble opinion, this was an all ’round good oil blend–without any silicone whatsoever.
A little bit about argan oil:
Argan oil is a beautiful feeling oil that soaks into the skin quickly and doesn’t leave an oily film. It has a nearly balanced oleic/linoleic acid structure which makes it fairly safe for acne sufferers and many claim that their acne actually improves with this oil. Argan oil is high in vitamin A and E, both of which are highly sought after in skin care for their regenerative and preventative properties. It’s soothing and safe to apply around the eyes. It’s an excellent oil to add to your face or eye cream for an anti-aging boost, as well as to your hair or hair care products for some smooth and shine. Argan oil is phenomenal for nails to help prevent brittleness and I, personally, notice a huge difference in my nails strength and flexibility when I use it.
According to the Nourish Organic website, they only use 100% organic, food grade ingredients. They state that they never use any parabens, phthalates, sulfates, petrochemicals, synthetic dyes or silicones. No propylene glycol, mineral oils, synthetic dyes, triclosan, EDTA or aluminum. And absolutely no artificial fragrances or preservatives. They’re cruelty free, vegan (except for products containing beeswax), and gluten-free. Sold. Into my cart it went and home with me it came.
My first application of this was on my legs and arms after a shower. It left me with hydrated, smooth skin all day long. I expected this and it delivered very well. In addition to leaving my skin feeling velvety and smooth, it refreshed the look of my pedicure and hydrated my bare fingernails and cuticles better than most of my other single oils do. That’s part of what I really like about using a blend. You get so many more benefits out of one application and you can really feel it. This was no exception.
The next application was on my face as my nighttime oil. I was worried about this, as I fare better with oils containing more linoleic acid than oleic, and most of these oils were higher on the oleic side (argan oil, I can usually get away with, fortunately). Based upon the ingredients alone, this argan oil blend would be ideal for someone with dry skin or who simply isn’t as prone to acne as I am. I was right to be concerned, as the next morning I had a couple of small pimples, but the rest of my skin (where I’m not prone to acne) looked fantastically dewy, smooth, and even toned. I do wish I could have continued using it on my face, because it felt really amazing going on. This would make an excellent massage oil (facial or body)!
The next application, and by far my favorite, was three drops scrunched into my damp, mid-back length hair. I have seriously fine, thin hair, so I was prepared to have to wear my hair up after it dried. Usually, I can get away with a single drop of oil, carefully distributed throughout the length, but no more. As it turns out, I didn’t have to put it up! My hair had just enough weight to it to keep it from doing that obnoxious, ethereal, float around my head thing and it was so shiny! The texture was smooth and buttery and the oils sealed in just enough moisture. Before bed, I applied another couple of drops and brushed it through. The next morning, you couldn’t tell I’d oiled my hair. I did a CO (conditioner only) wash, applied another couple of drops to the ends, and again, it looked fantastic. Fabulously smooth, shiny, and hydrated hair all the way down to the ends. This one’s definitely a keeper in my oil stash.
